TOURNAMENT REPORT

Millers Ferry
May 23, 2009
Ellis Landing

With a strong low pressure front and the forecast for heavy rains the Hawg Hunters headed for Miller's Ferry on the Alabama River.
Recent high water had fallen out, and the chance for a good bite was excellent. We had heavy cloud cover and rain squalls most of the day.
Temps were in the low 70's and water temps hovered around 69. Most of the water had a good stain but was very fishable.
We had 17 members participating in the tournament.

My partner for the day was Ken Repine. We met up early on Saturday morning and headed for the river and discussed a plan on the ride up.
We went to a little cove that is a favorite of mine on the lower part of the lake. I have always called it "blue canoe" because some years ago someone used to keep a blue canoe tied up on a hillside overlooking the cove. We started fishing our way in and I picked up a nice fish on a frog in the grass edge. In short order I caught several others and had a nice limit by 7:30 AM. We kept on fishing frogs until about 2:00 PM . I culled a couple on the frog but still needed a kicker. About 2 PM we made a move up river to a bank that has produced for me several times before.
Lucky for us the fish were there again and I culled 6 more nice keepers in 30 minutes and found my kicker as nice 4.02 lb large mouth.
Ken worked hard all day but only managed one keeper, but had several nice fish get off the way to the boat.
While fishing was good for us, the weather was really rough with driving rain for most of the day and high winds in the afternoon,
making boat control and fishing the strong current a challenge. Needless to say we were both really tired by the end of the tournament.

At the scales everyone had fish to weigh. All of us were soaked from the heavy rains and really were a sad looking bunch. Stories and lies were told and the usual banter among friends kept us all laughing and grinning. Jere Jaillite, staying consistent as usual,
had a limit weighing 8.53 lbs to take 4th place. Tony Boyette had a nice bag (5) also and took 3rd place with 9.15 lbs.
Buddy Yates, who has only been with us for a few months again showed up with a nice bag of 5 fish weighing 11.26 lbs to take 2nd place.
Guys, you better keep you eyes on this fellow because he has consistently brought in the fish. John Buck managed to get the win with
5 fish weighing 13.22 lbs. He also had the lunker at 4.02 lbs.

Fish were really caught on a variety of lures with worms taking most, and a lot of fish were caught on spinner baits, others caught fish on frogs,
jigs, and crank baits. Overall I think if you got the bait in front of the fish, they bit.

Our next tournament is on the Tensaw River out of Cliff's Landing. It will be our first "summer season" tournament and will end at 2:00 PM.
The dates to remember are Wednesday, June 17, for the meeting at 7 PM, and June 20, for the tournament.
Make plans to attend both the meeting and the tournament.
