TOURNAMENT REPORT
ESCAMBIA RIVER

NOVEMBER 15, 2008

The Hawg Hunters fished the November tournament out of Smith's landing on the Escambia River. As one could expect with a tournament weekend, a cold front passed through on Friday with rain and falling barometers, leaving us with high blue bird skies, rising barometer, wind, and cooler temps. The water was still in good shape in the lower areas of the river and the color was good for the Escambia. The surface temp ranged from about 60-65 during the day and we had a falling tide until about late morning.

I drew out behind Mr. Hook 1.com, Jim Bailey Sr, and we set off in his nice Ranger to find the elusive little bass on the mighty Escambia.
We decided to stay in the grass areas and try to catch a limit of smaller fish and then to move upstream and hunt for a kicker or two in the afternoon. We started throwing small buzz baits in the grass. In a short time I had 6 or 7 hook ups but only short fish.
Jim got a few rolls but no takers. We then started fishing worms on a cut bank, and each of us had hits and short fish.

The wind really howled all day and with an outgoing tide the current was ripping along. Many of the banks we wanted to fish were unfishable dues to high wind and waves and extremely strong current. Basically we stayed in the lower delta area all day and wound up catching about 30 fish between the two of us. We fished a variety of worms but by far our best producer was green pumpkin trick and finesse worms. By weigh in time I had two small keepers and Jim had one small keeper. We fished hard all day but could only manage short fish.

Billy Myrick managed to get the win with a limit weighing 5.81 lbs. He said he caught most of his fish on a white spinner bait and junebug worms. Jere Jaillite had 2nd place with 4 fish weighing 4.85 lbs. Dave Bock grabbed the 3rd slot with 5 fish for 4.15 lbs. Rounding out the honors in 4th was Dave Dyess with 4 fish weighing 3.97 lbs. The lunker went to Mack Cramer at 1.83 lbs. Most everyone caught fish but all had problems getting the good bite with keeper fish. Most of the fish were caught on spinner baits and worms.
Congratulations to all who persevered the tough conditions and still caught fish.

Next month we fish the Tensaw River. Remember that the meeting and the tournament are a week earlier than normal due to the Christmas holidays. Also remember our Awards Banquet is December 5, at 6:00PM at Cock of the Walk Restaurant.
Make your plans to attend all these club functions and support the club.
