TOURNAMENT REPORT

Alabama River
September 19-20, 2009
Swift Creek

The Hawg Hunters fished out of Swift Creek on the Alabama River for the September tournament. Swift Creek landing is located in Autaugaville, Alabama, just west of Prattville. Hopes were high for a good tournament with lots of fish and much prettier water than we have in our area. Mother Nature had other ideas. During Friday's practice time we encountered the likes of KVD, G-MAN, and IKE just to mention a few of the BASS Elite who were finishing the last day of their tournament. Rains earlier in the week and started to bring a slight rise and color to the water, but still a lot of good fish were located on Friday. Then Friday night the rains poured and again on Saturday we got rain and the river rose more and got muddier and more stained. Then on Saturday night it came a flood and the river rose about 2 feet and the color went to red mud and rolling current.

Dave Boch and I drew out as partners and we had a good time catching fish and telling tales all weekend. We located fish on main river points and that's where we spent our time on Saturday and we caught a lot of fish, but they were only keepers nothing of size.
We caug
ht most of our fish on crank baits and worms (shakey heads)

Due to a technical glitch I do not have the weights for the top places for day one. But I do know the first 2 places for that day.
Jeff Weaver showed his skills and brought in a nice limit. to take the lead in day 1. Mr. Consistent (Buddy Yates) had a nice limit for 2nd place. Also I do not know who had lunker for day 1 or the weight.

After the weigh in we had a fish fry at the hotel. Dave Dyess organized it all and put it together with some help from several guys especially Lee Brannon, Jeff Weaver, and Randy Cole. Several others pitched in to lend a hand but I don't remember all the names. Anyway it was a great time and everyone had their fill and no one went away hungry. The food was excellent and we even had dessert provided by Jeff who coaxed his wife to make a bunch of brownies for us and they were great also!
Really special thanks to all who helped in any way.

Sunday we arrived to find the river had risen 2 feet and the water was rolling with red mud. Needless to say our fish had left the main points. They simply moved back in the creeks to the first set of secondary points for us. Again we concentrated on using crank baits and shakey head worms to find our fish. By the end of the day I had managed another small limit and Dave had 4.
We never had the good fish we were looking for but at least we caught fish.

At the scales Buddy Yates again brought in a limit (9.73) and took the win with a total of 17.45 lbs. The surprise of the day was Lee Brannon who brought in a beautiful limit (a bit over 14 lbs) for a 2 day total of 15.49 lbs to take second place. Third place was Jeff Weaver who had a total of 12.59 lbs. John Buck took 4th place with 12.08 lbs. There was a tie for lunker on Sunday with both Lee Brannon and Dave Dyess bringing in nice large mouths each weighing 4.00 lbs.

Most fish were caught on crank baits in shad patterns and on dark worms. However Lee Brannon got on a buzz bait bite and caught his limit on Sunday buzzing the grass. Guys it turned out to be a really good tournament in spite of the weather.
Even Pistol Pete Potter (who is a lifetime member now living in that area) fished with us.
Great to see you again Pete!

Next month is our fish off at Lay Lake. It will be a 2 tournament also. Remember that this tournament is actually 2 tournaments in one with separated awards, 1, our monthly tournament and 2, our fish off. Lay produces well this time of year so I'm really looking forward to seeing a lot of good fish at that time. Also remember we will have a steak cook out so make your plans to attend.

Keep Your Hooks Sharp!
